ELU Courses in Surabaya

On 21 January 2008, four English Language Upgrading (ELU) Level 1 classes (Hasanuddin Group) commenced at ELTIS Surabaya. 84 Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) teachers from schools in Situbondo, Bondowoso and Probolinggo joined the 10 day intensive course at the IAIN Sunan Ampel campus in Surabaya.

The teachers attended 5 hours of communicative English classes each day and were give homework assignments each evening. The lessons focused on improving the skills of the teachers, as well as improving their vocabulary base and understanding of grammatical structures. At the end of the course, each participant took home a Home Study Module pack, containing assessed and self-assessed consolidation activities totaling about 40 hours of study, for completion before returning to ELTIS Surabaya to join the next level ELU 2 at the end of March.

‘I couldn’t believe how quickly the lessons went by — I was enjoying myself so much I didn’t even have a chance to think about the time!’

A number of the trainees attended an evaluation meeting before the course ended and they gave very positive feedback  — they commented on the range of different methodologies and techniques used in the classes and enjoyed the way the materials were used creatively. They felt that their English had improved significantly over the two weeks and they were more confident about speaking English. They picked up lots of new ideas which they are keen to use with their own students when they get back to their schools. One participant commented ‘I couldn’t believe how quickly the lessons went by — I was enjoying myself so much I didn’t even have a chance to think about the time!’

Another positive aspect is that the MTs teachers are already developing friendships and some plan to visit each other’s schools in the course break before they start ELU 2.

Two classes of ELU 4 (Teuku Umar Group) started their course on Monday 4th February, with 28 participants in total. The trainers for this level were Wahju, Rodo and Irma. They tested into the highest level during the Placement Test, and as such, already have a strong command of English. This has allowed the trainers to engage them in some thought-provoking discussions which encourage them to use their English skills, while at the same time focusing on existing problems with grammar.
